Why I Started Traveling With Bone Broth Everywhere

There is something funny about wellness routines.
They can work beautifully when you’re home, your refrigerator is full, your kitchen is available and your schedule behaves itself.
Then you travel.
Suddenly you’re standing in an airport at 6:30 a.m. looking at pastries, packaged snacks and a breakfast sandwich wondering, Is this seriously all I’ve got?
I know that feeling very well.
And it’s one of the reasons I became obsessed with finding a way to make real bone broth convenient enough to travel.
The Food I Didn’t Want To Leave At Home
Years ago, when I started paying much closer attention to the relationship between food and how I felt, bone broth became an important part of my routine.
I started drinking a cup regularly, and I personally noticed a major difference in how I felt—particularly in my energy and overall sense of nourishment.
So naturally, I wanted to keep doing it.
There was just one ridiculously obvious problem:
Bone broth does NOT travel well.
Traditional bone broth is mostly liquid. It needs to be refrigerated or frozen. It takes up valuable space. And unless traveling with a cooler full of frozen soup sounds like your idea of a relaxing vacation, it’s simply not very practical.
I didn’t want to choose between traveling and maintaining the food rituals that made me feel good.
So I started looking for another way.
Could Real Bone Broth Become Travel-Friendly?
The question wasn’t simply, “How can I turn bone broth into a powder?”
That would have been easy.
What mattered to me was finding a way to preserve the broth while staying aligned with what I actually believe about wellness:
Start with real food.
That philosophy is closely aligned with a central idea in functional nutrition: food is more than calories. The foods we eat provide proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and many other compounds that interact with our biology.
I didn’t want bone broth to become another artificially flavored “wellness product.”
I wanted bone broth to still be bone broth.
That’s when I found freeze-drying.
The Technology That Changed Everything
Freeze-drying removes water from frozen food under vacuum, creating an extremely lightweight, shelf-stable product.
For me, that solved the fundamental problem.
Instead of traveling with containers of liquid broth, I could carry the concentrated freeze-dried broth in a pouch and reconstitute a cup when I wanted one.
Add hot water.
Stir.
Drink.
Suddenly something that had been tied to my refrigerator could come with me.
And THAT was exciting.
Airport. Hotel. Airbnb. Road Trip.
This is where the idea becomes much bigger than convenience.
Healthy eating often becomes hardest exactly when life gets interesting.
You’re catching a flight.
You’re attending a conference.
You’re driving for six hours.
You’re staying somewhere with barely a kitchen.
You’re camping.
You’re running from one commitment to another.
The modern wellness industry often answers those situations with more products: powders, bars, gummies, capsules and bottled drinks.
I don’t think everything needs to become a supplement.
Sometimes I simply want FOOD.
That doesn’t mean supplements don’t have a place, and nutrition is highly individual. Even within functional medicine, personalized nutrition is emphasized because there isn’t one dietary approach that works identically for everyone.
But I love asking a simpler question first:
Can I nourish myself with real food?
That’s the philosophy behind La Caldería.
Natural Supplementation Can Start With Food
We sometimes think taking care of ourselves has to be complicated.
The giant supplement cabinet.
The perfect morning routine.
The expensive smoothie with 14 ingredients.
The complicated meal plan you follow for four days before real life takes over.
But wellness also happens through the ordinary things we do consistently.
Eating nutrient-dense foods.
Moving our bodies.
Sleeping.
Managing stress.
Getting outside.
Connecting with people.
And finding nourishing foods that we can realistically keep eating when our schedules aren’t perfect.
Whole, minimally processed foods are a recurring foundation in functional-medicine nutrition messaging because food supplies far more than calories alone.
For me, bone broth fits naturally into that philosophy.
It’s not about chasing a miracle ingredient.
It’s about making nourishment easier.
My Suitcase Has A Weird Little Secret
These days, when I pack, there is usually something slightly unusual tucked between my clothes.
Bone broth.
And I kind of love that.
Because that little pouch represents exactly what I wanted La Caldería to become:
Ancestral nourishment that actually works with modern life.
At home.
At work.
At a hotel.
On a road trip.
At an Airbnb.
Or wherever I’m lucky enough to go next.
I don’t believe taking care of yourself should make your world smaller.
I believe feeling better should help you experience MORE of it.
And if making real bone broth portable means I can take one small nourishing ritual with me wherever life goes?
That little pouch is definitely coming in my suitcase.
